Michael Enzi was born in Bremerton, Washington, but when he was an infant his family moved to Wyoming. He earned his B.A. from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. At age 30 he was elected mayor of Gillette, Wyoming, then served for three years on the Department of Interior Coal Advisory Committee. He was then both a state representative and a state senator.
