G.K. Butterfield grew up in Eastern North Carolina and graduated from North Carolina Central University and its law school in 1974. He was an attorney and handled several voting rights cases before being elected judge in 1988. He later became a state Supreme Court justice in 2001, and then was elected to the House in a special election in 2004. He is a chief deputy whip for the Democrats. Official Biography
