Claire McCaskill was born in Rolla, Missouri. She waitressed for six years to help pay for college and law school the at University of Missouri - Columbia. She clerked for the Missouri Court of Appeals before working as an assistant prosecutor in Kansas City. She was elected to the Missouri State Legislature in 1982. McCaskill became the Jackson County Prosecutor in 1993, and worked as Missouri Auditor starting in 1999. She unsuccessfully ran for governor in 2004 before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006.
